Egypt began a process of slow decline by the end of Dynasty XX, which extended for few centuries and the country was once again divided into two. Egypt fell under the control of the Persians in 525 B.C., and became a part of the vast Persian Empire and was governed by Cambyses, the first king of Dynasty XXVII.
Along with Egyptian collaborators, the Persians were successful for nearly two centuries. In the 4th century B.C., Egypt regained its independence only for a short period. With the fall of Egypt to the Persians for a second time in 343 B.C., the reign of Nectanebo II, the last Egyptian pharaoh, came to an end.
