Ramses the Great

The Egyptians under their mighty king, Ramses the Great, were a strong force. There are many accounts of the Pharaoh Ramses II fighting with the Hittites on Egypt’s Syrian frontier. As a boy, Ramses participated with his father, Seti I, in the wars against the Hittites. He also learned from his father how to govern successfully
TThe first part of Ramses reign saw constant war with the Hittites. But when the leaders of both nations realized that there could be no outright winner, a peace was proposed. The peace treaty can be seen today, carved on the walls of the Karnak.
The most important of Ramses’ works are the two great temples carved out of the mountainside at Abu Simbel, in Nubia. The larger of the two is fronted by four colossal figures of the king that stand 18 meters high. When Ramses died at the age of 92, he was buried in the Valley of the Kings near Thebes.
