The Ancient Egyptian Gods
|
TThe ancient Egyptians worshipped many gods.
The chief deity was Re, the sun god. The Egyptians relied on Re along with
Rennutet for good harvest. Isis was the most important goddess, representing
motherhood and the devoted wife. Her husband, Osiris - who was also her brother
- ruled over vegetation and the kingdom of the dead. The son of Osiris and
Isis, Horus, was often depicted as the god of the sky.
Each Egyptian city worshipped its own special
group of gods. There were usually a trio - a god, a goddess, and their son. The
people of Memphis, for instance, worshipped Ptah, the protector of craftsmen;
Sekhmet; and their son, Nefertum
Most ancient Egyptians prayed to their gods at
home, not at temples. Each temple was the home of a particular god, and a
priest was its caretaker. Priests offered prayers to the god upon people’s
request.
