The New Kingdom
|
The first kings of Dynasty XVIII concentrated
on strengthening their borders - a task that meant bringing Nubia, which they
called Kush, and Syria under control. Once this was accomplished, the New
Kingdom began to flourish and lasted from 1554 B.C. to about 1070 B.C.
The Pharaohs of the New Kingdom were treated
as gods on earth. They built huge temples and fortresses that can still be seen
in Egypt. Some of these were Thutmose III, Ramses II, Ramses III, Akhenaton,
and Queen Hatshepsut. The end of the New Kingdom period marked the end of the
fabulous civilization of ancient Egypt
