The city has 400,000 population, situated on the Mediterranean Sea, and at the northern end of the Suez Canal. People in Port Said work on fishing and industries like chemicals, processed food, and cigarettes. Port Said is also an important harbor both for exports of Egyptian products like cotton and rice, and also a fuelling station for ships that pass through the Suez Canal. There are numerous old houses with grand balconies on all floors, giving the city a distinct charm.

Port Said port was founded at the time of digging the Suez Canal in 1869, to offer services to the ships that cross the canal and to handle its goods and passengers.
