The Unfinished Obelisk

Built of Red Granite, The unfinished obelisk at Aswan on the east bank of the Nile in upper Egypt would have been the largest, heaviest obelisk built by the ancient Egyptians.

The cutting had to be stopped due to a crack in the granite, which caused it to be abandoned.

The Unfinished Obelisk still lies in the quarry, detached on all but its lower side. If it had been completed, it would have been 137 feet tall and weighed 1,168 tons (The largest survivor, the Lateran obelisk in Rome, rises 105 feet and weighs 455 tons!.)
Now the abandoned partially carved obelisk gives us information about how ancient stonecutters worked. The place has recently been renovated and equipped with tourist facilities.
